Wynnum’s only cinema admits tough times, goes into voluntary administration

When Wynnum’s Majestic Cinema answered the call of thousands of local residents and opened a cinema in Wynnum nearly three years ago back in March 2021, it’s fair to say that, as COVID restrictions were (albeit slowly) coming to an end in Queensland, it was difficult to foresee other problems.

In a note to Majestic cinema patrons on Thursday 1st February, Majestic Cinemas CEO Kieren Dell explained that the operator had appointed voluntary administrators ‘in order to restructure its business for the future’, citing the many challenges in the last few years including – natural disasters, the pandemic, the writers’ strike in Hollywood and the resulting lack of consistent major movie releases – as the causes of the tough times all cinema chains have been experiencing.

He stressed that the cinemas – including the Wynnum cinema – would remain open for business during the restructure and that he was optimistic that the business would emerge stronger.

You can read the official statement from the group here and information on how the restructure affects moviegoers and Movie Club Members here.

Now is a good time to go to the movies! Check the movies showing at the moment here.

2023 saw the closure of a number of well established retail businesses in Wynnum Central and there are probably more to come – it is tough times for anyone in retail, especially smaller operators. What is interesting is that there are also quite a few new arrivals in Wynnum Central too – WynnumCentral will put together a short summary of the comings and goings last year soon.

PS Just as we were putting together this article we heard about another pending exit from Wynnum – the Thai D Thai restaurant at the North end of Bay Terrace also recently announced they were closing after 6 years in business.
