Brisbane City Council announces Wynnum Central as the next suburban renewal precinct project
Brisbane City Council has just announced that the Wynnum Central precinct will be the focus of the second suburban renewal precinct project in Brisbane. The first project announced a few months ago is the one for Stones Corner.
Here is all of the information from Brisbane City Council on the project for Wynnum Central…
Wynnum CBD to become suburb of the future
Wynnum’s centre is set to transform as the latest suburban renewal precinct to be announced by the Schrinner Council.
Brisbane has grown faster than any other capital city over the past decade, with more than 400,000 people expected to move to the city by 2046.
Brisbane’s Sustainable Growth Strategy identifies housing and lifestyle opportunities in under-utilised commercial and industrial areas to cater to Brisbane’s rapid growth.
London harnessed the power of urban renewal following the 2012 Games and Brisbane needs to take these lessons and create our own legacy ahead of Brisbane 2032. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner
Wynnum’s CBD is the second precinct to be identified as part of city’s suburban renewal program and follows the closing of community consultation on the Stones Corner suburban renewal plan on Tuesday, November 19.
The focus area for the precinct will span from Berrima Street to Clara Street and along Tingal Road and Bay Terrace, encompassing Wynnum Central Station and the core parts of Bride Street, Charlotte Street, Florence Street and Edith Street.
The precinct plan will provide clear guidance to the local community and building industry so opportunities for more housing, employment and transport connections in the right areas can be maximised.
As more people are attracted to this growing suburb, we want to unlock new opportunities for housing and employment, enabling more people to live closer to public transport and the foreshore. Our Suburban Renewal Precincts will continue to breathe new life into urban areas across the city and we’re looking forward to getting feedback from residents on how we can make the Wynnum CBD even better. Civic Cabinet Chair for City Planning and Suburban Renewal Adam Allan
The vision for the Wynnum Centre Suburban Renewal Precinct Plan proposes:
• Greater housing supply and diversity of housing that caters to a range of demographics
• A revitalisation of the centre precinct as a vibrant, mixed-use destination with distinctive high streets and a wide range of shops and services.
• More opportunities for employment, education and services
• Improved connectivity between the precinct, the foreshore and public transport networks
• Improved public landscaping and design
Public consultation will begin in early 2025.
Wynnum’s CBD is the beating heart of Brisbane’s bayside and there is so much potential to make it even better. The revitalisation of the Wynnum CBD will support business, employment and lifestyle opportunities across the community. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and I are committed to making our bayside an even better place to live. I look forward to hearing from local residents about how they imagine the future of Wynnum. Councillor Alex Givney
