Free health screening including diabetes risk, blood pressure and cardiovascular risk and a comprehensive medication advice are being offered by pharmacists Kerry Denham and Peter Evans at Bayside AMCAL Pharmacy. They can be found at 78 Edith St, Wynnum.
Both Kerry and Peter are local Wynnum people having gone to the local schools, then on to the University of Queensland and then back to serve the local community where they have worked and owed pharmacies for more than 20 years.
Pharmacists are the central point for unwell people, not only advising them on their medication and minor health concerns but also working closely with their doctors and other healthcare service providers to provide the best health outcome for their customers.
Bayside AMCAL Pharmacy is at the heart of the Wynnum community, caring for locals from babies right through to their grandparents and great-grandparents.
“As Wynnum has a large ageing population we offer many services such as Dose Administration Aids, Home Delivery & a MedsCheck program which gives customers a one-on-one appointment with the pharmacist.” Kerry says. “A lot of people get confused about their medications so we can advise them, explaining what each does. We can also identify and explain any side effects. This is part of the government’s MedsCheck program.” she explains.
“We assist older people to stay in their homes as long as possible, ensuring they have the right care,” Kerry says. “For those who are taking multiple medications, we can put them into blister packs so they know they are taking the correct medication and at the right time.”
Bayside AMCAL Pharmacy is also an Access Point for the National Diabetes Service Scheme (NDSS) where diabetics can purchase glucose test strips & insulin needles at subsidised prices. “Our pharmacists have a special interest in diabetes care and are always available to help advise diabetics with any concerns they may have in the ongoing management of their condition,” Kerry says. “Our pharmacist can also advise if you are eligible for the government funded Diabetes MedsCheck.”
In conjunction with the Heart Foundation the pharmacy runs the KNOW YOUR NUMBERS health screening twice a year, in May and September, which provides free blood pressure testing to the community. The focus of this program is to identify people who are not aware they have raised blood pressure which is a major risk factor in reducing the chance of having a stroke or heart attack.
The staff at Bayside AMCAL Pharmacy are interested in their customers and more importantly their health outcomes. “Keeping customers healthy and providing a solution to their health needs is our pharmacy’s main aim,” says Kerry.
Bayside Amcal Pharmacy is a member of WynnumCentral.
